Plastering - What Qualifications do you Need?

To become a plasterer you will need to gain a NVQ level 2 in plastering. This qualification is recognized as the industry standard and will allow you to apply for jobs as a plasterer or become a self employed plasterer.

The city & Guilds 2617 courses will train you up to the required standard to be able to pass the NVQ assessment.

Basic Level of requirements to become a Plasterer:

  • City & Guilds 2617 Basic construction skills Plastering

  • Plastering NVQ - level 2

You gain the NVQ level 2 in plastering when you are assess by a city & guilds examiner, who will observe your work and judge if you are up to the required standard.

By the time you have completed the Plastering courses you should be more than capable of passing this test.

You do not need any previous experience or qualifications to start on a plastering course, all you need is enthusiasm and a eagerness to learn your chosen trade.

Intensive Plastering Courses

You will learn everything you will need to enter the workplace as a fully qualified plasterer including:

  • To cut and fix plaster board to walls and ceilings.
  • To tape standard and internal joints.
  • To cut and fix angle beads around windows and reveals.
  • To prepare surfaces before plastering using bonding plaster and finishing plaster, ensuring a flat finished surface ready for decorating.
  • To mix plastering materials.
  • To skim walls.
  • To skim ceilings
  • To apply PVA adhesive Unibond to existing surfaces
  • To render external walls using sand and cement.


Plastering Job Profile

Plasterer's can earn:

  • Starting around £16,000 - £20,000 per year

  • Up to £28,000 per year
    or more with experience

Hours Worked

  • up to 39 per week Monday to Friday

You may be required to work weekends and evenings in order to meet a construction deadline.

If you are self employed the more you work the more you can make.

Due to the nature of this job you will be working indoors, the work can be somewhat physical demanding and you would need a good head for heights.
