City & Guilds 6217 Plastering Courses

If you're thinking about training to become a plasterer, it's important for you to understand what courses will get you the right qualifications for you to enter the workspace.

One such qualification is run by the City and Guilds; they are the industry recognized body for setting the course syllables to get people to the right level of skills they'll need to enter the trade.

If you have this qualification any potential employer will understand that you have been taught the required skills to be able to work competently on site.

So before you enrol on a plastering course make sure the course provider is City & Guilds accredited, that way you can be sure of getting top quality training, Don’t be shy just ask them!

In regards to plastering, the City & Guilds 6217 Plastering Certificate is ideal for training people who have no previous knowledge of plastering up to the level of being a skilled plasterer. These courses can last from as little as 6 – 8 weeks although you can spread them over 12 months depending on your personal circumstances and course provider.

To obtain a City & Guilds 6217 Plastering Certificate you must complete 9 units with 7 being mandatory and 2 optional that you may choose.

Below is a list of mandatory units:

• Repairing a patch in a plastered wall
• Boarding and setting a ceiling in one coat
• Applying a floating coat to wall and attached pier
• Applying & finishing the setting coat to a floored wall & attached pier
• Applying a floating coat to square or rectangular column
• Applying a floating finishing coat to a square or rectangular column
• Scrim and skim finish with plaster

And the optional units:

• Screening a sand & cement floor from a given level or datum point
• Introduction to fixing floor tiles and skirting tiles
• Applying a textured finish with border
• Re plaster over textured ceiling using bonding agent
• Applying a plain rendering and finish with a wood float
• Applying a Tyrolean hand machine finish to a prepared wall
• Fixing bell cast bead and applying scratch coats to wall areas
• Applying pebble dash finish to prepared wall

Once you have successfully completed the 9 units your course provider will be awarded your City & Guilds Plastering certificate.

Although you now would have a City & Guilds Technical Certificate which proves you have undergone the correct training to become a plasterer, to be considered a fully qualified plasterer you should now try to obtain something called a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ).

An NVQ basically testifies that you have shown to an NVQ assessor you can put into practice what you have learned on the city & guilds courses in the work space.
